Vitamin C

Antioxidant vitamin

INCI · Ascorbic Acid / ascorbyl derivatives

What it is

A water-soluble antioxidant vitamin used topically to brighten and defend. Pure ascorbic acid is the most-studied form; stabilised derivatives trade a little potency for shelf stability.

How it behaves

Neutralises free radicals generated by UV and pollution, participates in the skin's own collagen-supporting pathways, and interrupts steps of melanin formation — which is why consistent use is associated with a more even, luminous tone.

Evidence · One of the most extensively studied topical antioxidants.

Matrikine signal-peptide complex

INCI · Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7

What it is

A pair of lipid-tagged peptides (matrikines) designed to reach the living layers of the epidermis without irritation — the gentle route to results retinol takes forcefully.

How it behaves

Matrikines act as messengers, signalling skin to maintain the matrix proteins that give it structure. In use this reads as support for the look of firmness and a softening of fine lines, without stinging or flaking.

Evidence · A widely studied peptide complex with published cosmetic trials.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptides

Signal peptide

INCI · Palmitoyl Oligopeptide

What it is

Short lipid-conjugated peptide fragments that partner with matrikines for a fuller renewal signal.

How it behaves

Communicates renewal to the skin overnight; non-irritating and well tolerated, which is why it suits nightly use where a retinoid might not.

Evidence · Established cosmetic peptide.

INCI · Biofermented amino acids & peptides

What it is

True collagen is animal-derived — so 'vegan collagen' is not collagen at all. It is a plant/biofermented blend of the amino acids and peptides that support skin's own collagen-friendly environment.

How it behaves

Conditions the surface and supports the plumped, cushioned look associated with well-kept skin. It works through peptides and hydration, not by delivering animal collagen — an honest distinction we keep.

Evidence · Ingredient-class supported; effect is conditioning and cosmetic.

Niacinamide

Cell-communicating vitamin

INCI · Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

What it is

One of the most versatile and best-tolerated actives in skincare, effective at modest concentrations (roughly 2–5%).

How it behaves

Supports the barrier by encouraging ceramide production, helps regulate sebum, limits the transfer of pigment to the surface (evening tone), and calms the look of redness. It layers with almost everything — the 'cancels out vitamin C' claim is outdated for modern formulas.

Evidence · Extensively studied; strong tolerability record.

Humectant polysaccharide

INCI · Sodium Hyaluronate / Hyaluronic Acid

What it is

A humectant that holds many times its weight in water. Multiple molecular weights hydrate at different depths of the upper skin.

How it behaves

Draws and binds water at the surface for an immediate plumped, dewy look. It adds no water of its own — in dry air it must be applied to damp skin and sealed with a moisturiser, or it can draw moisture outward.

Evidence · Foundational, well-characterised humectant.

INCI · Charcoal Powder / Carbon

What it is

A highly porous form of carbon used to clarify.

How it behaves

Its enormous surface area binds excess oil and surface impurities, which is why it suits an evening resurfacing step for skin that looks dull or congested.

Evidence · Traditional and cosmetic use for clarifying.

Caffeine

Vasoconstrictor & antioxidant

INCI · Caffeine

What it is

A small, fast-penetrating molecule favoured for the eye area.

How it behaves

Temporarily constricts local blood vessels and reduces fluid, which visibly diminishes puffiness and shadow for a fresher-looking eye; it is also mildly antioxidant. The effect is real but temporary — a morning brightener, not a permanent change.

Evidence · Well-studied for the appearance of puffiness.

What it is

Short amino-acid chains that act as messengers rather than actives you feel working.

What it is

The skin's principal fat-soluble antioxidant, and a classic partner to Vitamin C.

How it behaves

Protects skin lipids and formula oils from oxidation, conditions and softens, and regenerates Vitamin C — the two are more effective together than apart.

Evidence · Long-established antioxidant.

What it is

A rich plant butter dense in fatty acids and unsaponifiables.

How it behaves

What it is

How it behaves

What it is

How it behaves

What it is

How it behaves

A small molecule that draws and holds water effectively and gently, keeping skin soft and comfortable and helping other steps absorb.
